Wedding Decorating Ideas

Have you been searching for wedding decorating ideas that will help to establish a certain mood for your ceremony and reception and make your wedding unforgettable?

WEDDING THEME

First, you should have a theme of some kind when you start to plan your wedding. The theme can be as simple as wanting a small intimate wedding.

Your theme will affect every decision you make, from the wedding colors, your dress, to all of your wedding decorating ideas.

Your wedding theme should be a reflection of your personality - something that you will feel comfortable with.

WEDDING EXPENSE

Not all wedding decoration ideas have to be expensive. There are many ways to save money once you start to plan for your wedding ceremony decorations and wedding reception decorations.

In the "Unique Ideas" section at the bottom of this page, there are several inexpensive wedding decorating ideas that can be used for your ceremony and reception sites.

WEDDING LOCATION

The location you have picked will help you to decide on some of the wedding decorations that you will use in your ceremony.

For example:

  • Outdoor Wedding

Nature takes care of a lot of the wedding decorations for you.

However, you will need to think about creating an alter, an aisle, and whether the guests will sit or stand.

These will be your first decisions and then you can enhance your ceremony site with other wedding decorating ideas.

  • Large Church, Empty Loft or Other Large Venues

Picture of old gothic church. This type of wedding site needs a lot of wedding decorations to make the space feel warm and special.

Check to see if the site has any flower, candle, or other policies that might effect your wedding decorating ideas.

Sometimes, larger sites will have a staff person assigned to the flowers and wedding decorations and will not allow you to bring in your own.

A plus side to larger venues is that often the cost for decorations can be split with other couples getting married on the same day.

  • Small or Modest Church

With just a little decorating, you can create the feeling of having entered a very special place.

With a smaller site, you can usually put your personal touch on the outside and inside of the ceremony site for very little cost.

WEDDING FLOWERS

Flowers are a fabulous way to add color, fragrance, and personal meaning to your wedding.

Many flowers can be purchased at wholesale prices from the internet or from a farmers market.

For my wedding, I ordered four dozen purple and white tulips from tulips.com.

The cost was very economical, the flowers were beautiful, and they arrived on the date that I requested.

Since every flower has a special meaning, choose the flower with the meaning that is closest to the message you are trying to convey with your wedding decorations.

Wedding Colors

Colors can help set the tone for your wedding ceremony. The wedding colors you choose can make your wedding seem elegant or fun and carefree.

Your wedding colors should reflect your personality. Don't just pick colors that are popular for this year's weddings. Choose a color that you really like.

Many brides choose a favorite shade or favorite flower they have always liked and go with that color. Which is a great idea!

The season you are getting married in can also help you decide on the colors you want to use in your wedding decorating ideas.

A good idea is to go with one primary color and then use one or two accents colors.

However, some brides choose to use many shades of one color. If you are not sure about mixing colors, this simple color scheme can be stylish and foolproof.

UNIQUE WEDDING DECORATING IDEAS

Wedding Aisle Decorations

  • Pew Wreaths - Depending upon the flowers you use, these wreaths can be elegant or casual. Plus, they are economical and easy to make.

  • Pew Bows - Can cost between $7 to $15 each! By buying ribbon on sale, you can make your own beautiful pew bows for only cents.

However, if you think that tying a bow is too hard, purchase a Bowdabra.

This handy little gadget makes perfect bows every time. It can be purchased online or at any hobby store and you can continue to use it for gift wrapping after your wedding.

  • Aisle Runner - An aisle runner is a very popular wedding decorating idea. You can purchase an aisle runner for around $30 and customize it with your monograms, or you can make the runner yourself.

An aisle runner can add elegance to your wedding. For an outdoor wedding, it can help keep stains off the hem of your dress and establish where you will be walking.

Wedding Reception and Ceremony Decoration Ideas

  • Tulle - Tulle, also known as netting, is a light-weight fabric that comes in just about every color. It is amazingly inexpensive, so can be bought by the bolt.

Picture of wedding chairs wrapped with a tulle bow. You can drape tulle on the wedding pews, around columns, over the doors and windows.

At your reception you can use tulle to wrap your guest favors, make bows, wrap the backs of chairs, drape over doors and windows. It can even be draped from the ceiling!

If you are getting married in a gazebo, you can wrap and drape tulle from top to bottom.

  • Click for information on decorating with tulle.

  • Kissing Balls - Kissing balls are an economical and versatile wedding decorating idea and easy to make.

Use kissing balls at the end of the church pews with pew hooks.

For an outside wedding, you can hang them from trees or use Shepherd Hooks at the end of the aisle.

You can also hang them from chairs or the ceiling at your reception.

Click here for instructions on making a kissing ball.

  • A Rose Garden - Fill the reception hall with as many roses as you can. You can buy the roses wholesale or cut them from friends gardens. You can also buy silk roses from craft stores that look very real.

Use the rose garden theme in your ceremony.

Picture of different colored roses. Use an abundance of roses for your alter flowers.

Line the sides of your aisle runner with rose petals and then have the flower girl sprinkle more in front of you.

Have each bridesmaid carry a different colored long stem rose and have each groomsman wear a different colored rose for their boutonniere.

  • Candlelight Wedding - Use this idea for an evening wedding. Place as many candles as you can afford all around the site.

Put them on pillars, in candelabras, along the window sills, and on top of the organ and the piano.

Use the flameless LED candles to line the sides of the aisle runner.

Have your attendants carry a single candle.

    Don't forget the Unity Candle.

Be sure the lights are dimmed, for the full effect of all this candle light.

Carry this theme over to your reception. Use one white candle on each table and give each guest a candle as a favor.

  • Magical Fairy Tale - This is a great wedding decorating idea, if you want the feel of dream-like elegance.

Fill the wedding chapel with dozens of evergreen trees decorated with small white lights.

Use plenty of white candles in tall candelabras.

Play only soft classical music and be sure the lights are dimmed.

  • The "Magical Fairy Tale" theme can be carried over into the reception also.

Use a single white candle for each table as a centerpiece.

Use as many of the small white lights as you can find. (You can probably borrow these from friends and family.) Wrap them around pillars and plants.

Have someone bring the evergreen trees from your ceremony to the reception.
