Medieval Theme Weddings

Medieval theme weddings have grown in popularity. Probably because they are romantic and fun.

Your medieval wedding can be as simple or as elaborate as you want.

INVITATIONS

This is where you can first set the stage for your wedding. Use parchment paper with black ink and a medieval font or calligraphy. Start your invitation with such wording as, "Let It Be Known Throughout The Land" or "Hear Ye, Hear Ye". Be sure to toss in many more Old English wording such as "Thou", "Thine" and "Beseech".

For an authentic touch, use a wax seal to close the envelope with.

LOCATION Picture of Gothic Church Building for Medieval Theme Wedding Try to find an old stone church, a Tudor style building or a woodland park (Robin Hood?). Even a country inn or chalet in the mountains would be a good setting for your medieval theme wedding.

COSTUMES

The clothing for a medieval theme wedding will definitely set the tone for the whole wedding. First you must decide if you are going to be royalty or peasants.

The men should wear doublets, tights and tunics with billowy shirts. The footwear can be boots or flat shoes. The men may also carry swords.

The women should wear long, slim gowns with an empire waist. Or a long gown with flowing bell sleeves and a drop waist.

Both set of costumes can be made of velvet or silk in rich jewel tones like gold, emerald, sapphire and ruby.

If you are good at sewing or know someone who is, there are several good sewing patterns you could use to make your own costumes.

Instead of a veil, the bride could wear a wreath of flowers.

Medieval brides carried a bouquet made of wildflowers and herbs. You could even use dried flowers and wrap them together with a long, flowing ribbon.

WEDDING MENU

Meat seems to be the main food for Medieval theme weddings.

Some traditional foods, include roasted meats, mutton, venison, veal, goose, tongue, sausages and fish.

If your wedding is being held outside, you might consider a "boar" roast.

You could also add cheeses, nuts, breads, custards and tarts to your menu.

Common drinks to serve at your medieval theme wedding are ales, mead (a thick wine made from fermented honey), and plenty of wine. Also, add water and milk for children and guests, who do not drink. Serve your drinks in pewter goblets.

To serve the meal, set up long tables with benches for your guests to eat at. Serve the food on pewter, silver or brass plates, if you can find them. If not, use pottery or wooden dishes.

During the Middle Ages, there were no forks - only spoons and knives. (However, you might want to furnish forks for the guests who have to have one.)

ENTERTAINMENT

Common instruments played during the medieval period were: the harp, flute, guitar, and mandolin. Employ a strolling musician to play the melodies of the period.

If you can not find a musician or a band to play Renaissance music, there are several CD's that you could purchase to play at your wedding. Two of these are: "Medieval Dance Music" and "Music For A Medieval Banquet".

There are also several singing groups - such as, Medieval Baebes and Anonymous 4 - that you might want to include in your wedding reception music.

You could also include magicians, jugglers or mimes as entertainment during the reception.
