Groomsmen Duties and Responsibilities

While the groomsmen duties are not as demanding as those of the best man, they still have a very important role in the wedding.

Groomsmen are usually brothers, relatives, or close friends of the bride and groom.

It is not necessary to have the same number of groomsmen as bridesmaids. However, it does look better if they are somewhat close in number.

There is no set number of ushers to have for a wedding. A good rule to follow is to have one usher for every fifty guests.

Pre-wedding Duties For Groomsmen:

  • Groomsmen help the Best Man organize the bachelor party.
  • Groomsmen attend all the prenuptial events.
  • The groomsmen rent or buy a tux in the style the groom has chosen.

Groomsman Or Usher?

The term groomsman or usher are often used interchangeably. So, many of the wedding day duties that are designated for an usher become the responsibility of the groomsmen.

However, in some areas, the usher and groomsmen have distinctly different roles. In these cases, the ushers only duties consist of seating guests.

Wedding Day Duties For Ushers and Groomsmen:

  • Ushers should arrive one hour early at the church to help seat guests.
  • Ushers often assist in directing parking.
  • Ushers distribute wedding programs to the guests.
  • Often, the ushers will seat the mothers and grandmothers of the bride and groom.
  • The designated ushers unroll and properly place the aisle runner - if there is one.
  • The groomsmen help run any last minute wedding errands.
  • Groomsmen stay with the groom until the wedding starts. Then they walk down the aisle to take their places at the front of the ceremony.
  • The groomsmen escort the bridesmaids out of the church after the recessional.
  • The groomsmen dance with bridesmaids at the reception.
  • Groomsmen can offer a toast to the bride and groom.
  • The groomsmen help the bridesmaids to decorate the getaway car.
  • The groomsmen and ushers return their attire to the rental shop.

Enjoy your role as a groomsman or usher. However, be sure to take the responsibility seriously. Remember it is a honor that your friend has bestowed upon you.
