Father Of The Bride Duties

Traditionally, the father of the bride had two tasks - pay for and show up for the wedding. But not any more.

Today, fathers are taking a much more active role in their daughter's weddings.

HOW TO GET THE FATHER OF THE BRIDE INVOLVED

While many fathers may not automatically think to offer to help with the planning of their daughter's wedding, there are many ways to help get them involved.

Ways to include your father in the planning:

  • Ask for his help in setting a budget for the wedding.
  • Get him to help with creating a guest list.
  • Have him help search for a reception site.
  • Get him to contact local hotels near the reception site for pricing and availability for out-of-town guests.
  • Have him help make arrangement for out-of-town guests' transportation.
  • Let him help research travel deals for the honeymoon.
  • Ask him for suggestions on the song list.

FATHER OF THE BRIDE ATTIRE

While the bride and groom will decide on the wedding party's attire, you can still check with your daughter and give any suggestions you may have on appropriate attire.

If you need to buy or rent a tuxedo, be sure to allow plenty of time to ensure availability.

PRE-WEDDING EVENTS

As the bride's father, you will be required to attend many of the pre-wedding parties. This may include an engagement party, a couple's wedding shower, the bachelor party, and the rehearsal dinner.

Engagement Party

The parents of the bride often host an engagement party. However, this is not a have-to-have event. Whether to have one is you, your wife, and your daughter's decision.

An engagement party is often a great time to get to know your daughter's future in-laws.

Couple's Wedding Shower

Many brides are choosing to have a couple's shower, instead of the traditional women-only affair.

If this is the case, you will be required to attend. But don't worry! A couple's shower is a lot of fun for everyone.

Bachelor Party

Sometimes the groom will invite his father and the bride's father to the bachelor party. However, don't assume that you are invited and don't be offended if you are not.

Rehearsal Dinner

This pre-wedding dinner is traditionally held after the ceremony rehearsal, which is usually on the night before the wedding.

You will be required to attend the rehearsal and dinner and give a toast welcoming the groom into the family.

TRADITIONAL DUTIES FOR THE FATHER OF THE BRIDE

From walking down the aisle to giving a toast at the reception, there are many traditional duties and responsibilities that involve the bride's father during the wedding and the reception.

Some of these duties are:

  • May ride with the bride to the ceremony.
  • Help to keep the bride calm.
  • Walk the bride down the aisle.
  • May stand in the receiving line, next to the mother of the bride.
  • Dance with your daughter at the reception.
  • Make a short toast at the reception after the best man.
  • Keep an eye on the supplies at the bar.
  • Be the last person to leave the reception.

A DAY OF HAPPINESS AND SADNESS

While happiness will intermingle with sadness, the memories from this special day will be some of the most wonderful that you and your daughter will ever share together.

During this hectic and exciting day, don't forget to remind your daughter just how special she is to you and be sure to tell her often that she is the most beautiful bride in the world.
